afsaneh Nowrouzi

posted Tuesday, 7 October 2003

bargeboo: afsaneh noroozi has been accused of murder for allegedly killing the man who tried to rape her. amnesty international has been working hard to get this sentence revoked.

bellow is a commentary from khorshid khanoom (lady sun) website, a good and active writer who seems to be respected quite a bit among other iranian web loggers. links to her blog are everywhere!

she is also an active advocate of women’s issues, from participating in iran’s first international women’s festival to posting somewhat controversial chronicles of her wedding to another web logger, without mehriyeh*.

  • if a woman commits adultery and her husband sees her, he can kill her. conclusion: she is dead.
  • if a woman is raped and she does not resist and allows it to happen, even if her husband does not find out, she will suffer long term and will be changed forever. conclusion: she is as good as dead.
  • if a woman is raped and she does not resist and while it is happening her husband arrives and assumes that it is consensual, he can kill her for committing adultery. conclusion: she is dead.
  • if a woman is raped and she resists and kills the rapist to avoid being raped, then the court sentences her to death for committing murder. conclusion: she is dead.
  • if …

moral of the story:

moral #1: esteemed ladies, try not to get raped. and if it did happen then do not resist and let it take place.

moral #2: be careful so the rapist does not turn out to be the head of ministry of information.

moral #3: it is your own fault anyway!

moral #4: she is dead …

* mehriyeh in iran is a traditional custom in which before a wedding has to take place the bride and groom, or mostly their families have to agree on a set “price” on her divorce consent. in other words, if the man wants to divorce her he has to pay her that money and then they are both free. traditionally the higher the amount, the bigger it is a sign of respect.

the reasoning behind the concept is to first deter the man from divorce by setting a very high price. also, in the event that divorce happens, then technically she will be financially protected while she figures out a way to support herself. this was particularly important when the average iranian woman was a homemaker and not financially independent.

many progressive women have come to view this tradition as a belittling and old-fashioned custom. especially, because more and more women have successfully entered the workforce after the islamic revolution in 1973. number of university educated, professional women, and also those who hold high ranking positions has increased dramatically.
