bargeboo: i feel that the photos above require a little more explaination: "babak khoramdin" founder of the rebelious group "khoram-dinan" is one of the most forgotten faces in iran/persia's history. the story of his uprising, battles and finally his brutal execution has many facts and myths combined. for a factual acount visit the "irangasht.com" website or for a more dramatic story visit "derafshe kavian" website.
Bellow is a section taken from the irangasht website, the part i find most interesting since i had no idea it went on in the many years that i grew up in iran:
"Although the rebellion died out with Babak's execution in 838,
Khorram-dinan survived as a sect until the late 11th century.
The locals celebrate Babak’s life on the first week of July every
year by climbing the mountain near his castle & playing traditional
Azari music."
fascinating! what amazes me more than anything is how i was brought up in a "progressive" household of poetry lovers, book collectors and free thinkers yet i had never heard of Babak's name before!
i dont know which is more sad, whether he was never successful in releasing persia from the greedy hands of arab invadors (talking about 800 a.d. here, ok? dont take it personally now!) or how his name has been forgotten over the years ... although his cause remains alive.
or perhaps he is not as forgotten as I first thought. Discovering about the yearly ritual that takes place in azarbayejan has been a pleasant surprise. This weblogin business is proving rewarding after all! wouldn’t this be an event to witness?!
