in june 2005, the famed mr. khatami the moderate and outgoing president of iran was replaced by the hardliners' choice: mahmoud ahmadinejad. As you may well have read, the legitimacy of this election was under question by many including some of the candidates themselves being prominent members of the regime, namely ayatollah karoubi. there were wide speculation also that he was chosen by the people because of the wide spread discontent over the wide differences of wealth and vast gap between the rich and the poor. ahmadinejad came into limelight recently when he declared his views on the continuation of the state of israel.several members of opposition in the parliament have raised the idea of disqualifying him on the grounds that he is unfit to rule the country.
I hope to write on these issues more on the days to come. right now however, having been away from this blog this long I feel it best to open shop again with a little humor. ebrahim navabi is one of the most prominent political satire writers in iran today. working actively in iran,he braves death threats and jail time to write about the government and many of its political loop holes. those who are familiar with ahmadinejad can understand how he can be such easy target for ridicule. what makes nabavi's brand of humor a little different is how clever his remarks and parodies are; never relying on physical attributes for example to point a finger at his target.
i came across the excerpt bellow in a local iranian newspaper. it specially resonated with me because i am a firm believer in the evils of organized religions: unfortunately you can not argue logically with faith. you are either good or bad; you will go to heaven or hell; "you are either with us or with the enemy". sounds familiar? these times we live in, decision makers of the world are ruled by their gods, be it jesus or allah. even the good old communists of china who could be relied on to avoid religion have sworn faithful obedience to the alter of the god of money. but again, we will get to all that later.

"you bush? me ahmadinejad!"
pay a little attention, they are fairly similar. so far i have been able to find these parallels between them. if you look too you will be able to find more.
1) both were liked by the general public, the educated elite and those with half a brain despised them. and yet both with just a little of cheating and tinkering with the votes were elected and continue to rule with creating an atmosphere of terror and paranoia.
2) both are very short and would be lost among a hundred people.
3) one was a lowly governor and the other a nobody of a mayor, and when they became candidates everyone thought: who would vote for them?!
4) both consider themselves highly moral people and yet in their rule the most immoral behavior has become the norm.
5) both learned what the capital of venezuela is after they were elected president.
6) both only think after they speak. they have successfully been able to create political disasters because of their mistakes in their speech.
7) both think they are in direct contact with god and are zealously religious.
8) the official preferred uniform of both is an overcoat. When they done this both look like truck drivers. And if they wear a suite they both look like waiters.
