bargeboo: i originally wrote this entry back in november 03. then i left it for a while, waiting for a breather from my other posts and then the bam tragedy happened and now i feel perhaps the best way to begin to move on from bam is this particular post. i guess it was bidding its time.

when you hear the name of the village (ziyarat = pilgrimage), you guess there must be a saint buried there. when they tell you that temple of one of emam reza’s* grand children is located there, your realize you have guessed correctly. its almost 70 years old and around 300 people live there. "ziyarat" is also famous for its warm water spring. have a look at "yalda ghobadi"’s photos from this location.

also from a comment left by a visitor: the complete name of this village is "ziyarat khase rood" and does not carry a religious significance by its name. about its history, the village has been a popular summer location for the people living in gorgan (a city north/west of iran)...

bargeboo: *emam reza, believed by the shiat sect of islam to be the eight in the line of religious leaders, direct descendent of prophet mohammad.  he holds a particular place in the heart of devoted moslems in iran. he is believed to be the emam (saint) of victims, those who cannot fend for themselves. according to legends he came to the rescue of a deer as it chased by hunters. he shielded the animal and rescued it to safety. his pilgrimage site in mashad – the second most religious city in iran next to ghom – is famous for its luxurious use of gold, fine hand woven carpets and overall awe inspiring majesty and grandeur.
